Steve spoke to Bloomberg Law reporter Stephen Lee about his new firm and his increased focus on monitorship work.

A few excerpts:

Steve Solow, one of the nation’s top environmental cops during the Clinton era, opened his own boutique firm on Monday with an eye toward specializing in corporate governance. One of the key differences at Solow’s new firm, Solow PLLC, will be his experience in designing and executing court- or government-appointed monitorships to ensure a company’s compliance program is working well, he said.

In Solow’s view, a monitor can help an organization identify unexpected obstacles to compliance, such as “ways in which, without intending to do so, they have set up countervailing priorities within the organization. It can also illuminate ways a company can copy what it already does really well in other instances and apply those strengths to their compliance work.”

Solow is best known in the District of Columbia bar as an environmental specialist, having led the Justice Department’s environmental crimes section. But at his new firm, headquartered in Washington, D.C., he plans to also handle white-collar defense cases and help clients with crisis response, strategic counsel, and internal investigations.
